Pupil Council

Each year 5 children from P1 - P7 are voted onto the Pupil Council by their fellow pupils. They meet regularly for a working lunch with Miss Clements and discuss how to improve the school. There is a box for suggestions in the entrance area of the school and anyone can put suggestions into this for discussion at the next Pupil Council meeting. Minutes of meetings are put in the entrance area on the Pupil Council board and things are also discussed at assembly. Other adults and children may be co-opted onto the Pupil Council during the year for specific activities as they arise.

In 2018 we set up other pupil committees so that more people could have leadership opportunities. The new groups are Eco Group, Library Group, IT support and we already had the Junior Road Safety Officers, Sports Committee and Pupil Council. All groups have set targets which form part of the school improvement plan.

Pupil Committees

We have several pupil committees in Shapinsay School.

Here is a summary of what they have been working on in term 1:

Shapinsay Pupil Council

We have been working on fundraising for Children in Need. We invited Pudsey to visit. We have a stall up with new LED keying’s. On Friday we have invited people to dress in patterns or pyjamas.

Sports Committee

We made a new animals PE display. We got our Gold Sports Award. We have a PE cupboard tidying rota. We have invited the badminton club in and will be writing to the roller derby people.

Library Group

We invited Sally into school, she is the children’s librarian from Kirkwall Library. We found some apps for encouraging reading. Sally gave us some books.

JRSO

We had a competition to design a riding hat and jacket. We liked the reflective ones.

ECO Committee

We would like to plant wild flowers to attract bees. We hope to apply for ‘your island your choice’ funding.

IT Support

The IT support group have been making sure that the laptops have been put away. They have taken photos for the website and they will be going up soon.

Pupil Committees

All children in the school take part in Eco activities throughout the year. These activities are part of the curriculum and we feel it is important that all children take responsibility,  You can see more of what we have been doing by clicking on the Nature tab.

Older children in the school may take leadership roles as Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) as the need arises.
