P7 Soaking 2016

Another fine Shapinsay School tradition was upheld with the annual P7 soaking. This year the staff and parents did a lot of bluffing to convince the children the soaking was happening on Thursday - and then we surprised them on Wednesday! We tricked them by taking everyone out for PE, sending the P7s off to get the equipment while the rest of the children, staff and parents waited outside with water balloon, water pistols and the hose!

P7s, thank you for being such good sports!

Shapinsay Picnic 2016

The children all did really well at the Picnic this year - here are some photos from the day

Hydrogen Challenge

Shapinsay is the place to watch because of developments using hydrogen to store and use energy. You can find out more about it on the Shapinsay Development Trust Page - click here.

Arcola energy came in to explain how it works and we had a go at making lego cars powered by hydrogen - we all really enjoyed it and learned lots!

Residential trips

Please check out the P4 - 7 page to see some videos and photos from the residential trips.

World War One

We are learning about World War One at the moment. Please click the link below to see what we are doing:

World War One Learning

Learning together

P1 - 7 children worked in groups to make a model habitat, linking the learning of the older class on plants with the younger class's work on animals. The children had to work in their groups to plan their model, research the animals and plants, create a food chain found within their habitats and explain how the plants and animals were adapted to their habitat. All the children did really well, well done!

Bikeability

Ian has been helping us learn to stay safe on our bikes. The older children will be taking their Bikeability Level 1 and 2 tests later this week.

Bag the Bruck

We all went to Sandgarth Beach to bag the bruck. We found 18 bags of rubbish (bruck), loads of netting, a plastic buoy and a buried anchor. We also found lots of mermaids purses which we will try to identify and then tell the Shark Trust what we found.

Thanks to everyone who came along to help, and to Stanley and Catherine-Ann for transport.

A visit from the Coastguard

Ian and Ron came to school to tell us about the job of Coastguards. We learned how to stay safe near the sea, and what we shouldn't touch on the beach (this is especially relevant with Bag the Bruck next week). We also got to look at the Coastguard vehicle and have a go at a pretend rescue.

P7 Table Top Sale

The P7s did a fantastic job and organised a sale in the school to raise money for their Lagganlia trip and for the P4 - 6 trip to Hoy later this term. They asked people to bring in things that they no longer needed so that they could be sold, wrote to local businesses to ask them for raffle prizes and asked Parent Council to provide refreshments. When the money was counted, there was a total of £446.53, which after the deposits had been taken out left an amazing £379.03. Well done P7, and thank you to everyone who came along to support the sale.
