More visitors

Mark and Ellie came to speak to us today. They work for Orkney Islands Council and help to make sure that animals are looked after. Ellie talked to us about dog fouling - it's important that dog owners pick up after their dogs.

Mark told us about all the animals that he used to see in Zimbabwe. It was really interesting. Thanks to Mark and Ellie for coming in!

The Bird Hide

We wrote a letter to Paul, the RSPB warden, asking if he could take us to the Bird Hide in Shapinsay and talk to us about the birds there. He wrote back and said that would be great, so we all walked up to the Bird Hide. Paul had lots of pairs of binoculars and we saw lots of different birds which we recorded on the blackboard at the hide. We even saw a Sedge Warbler which has flown all the way from Africa!

A visit from Gemma

Gemma came in to talk to us about her job at the Vets. She told us what she had studied to do her job. She also checked Patchy's leg and trimmed the guinea pigs' claws (they didn't like that much) and answered our many questions! Thank you Gemma! We took lots of photos ourselves, and afterwards we learned how to take the memory card (carefully!) out of the camera and print photos from the laptop to stick into our Learning Logs.

Visits to Northvet and Petmania

We went to visit Northvet and Petmania in Kirkwall to help us find out more about animals.

When we got back to school we wrote recounts on the laptops and learned how to insert photos into our work. We remembered that recounts should be past tense, in chronological order and should include detail. You can read some of our work by clicking the links below:

Branching Keys

We learned how to use branching keys to sort animals by asking yes and no questions.
